PATHOLOGICAL CONCEPT OF CHINESE MEDICINE

In the view of Chinese Medicine, the human body physiological phenomena are just like the phenomena of nature: There are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Inside of the human body, there are cold, heat, deficiency, and excessiveness just like the outside world. In hot weather, we dress less. In cold weather, we put on more clothes. We adjust accordingly. We can use food and medicine to adjust changes inside of our bodies. Anything (food and medicine) intake into the body produces different types of function such as cold, heat, warm or cool.

Chinese medicine grossly classifies diseases into two different types: Cold Syndromes and Heat Syndromes. In heat syndromes, patient may present red-face, fever, thirst, localized red inflammation, dark yellow urine with burning sensation while urinating, emotional irritability, dysphoria with feverish sensation in palms and soles, red tongue with yellow coating, etc. These are all signs of the “heat syndromes.” There are two causes of heat syndromes. First, patient is invaded by “heat agents,” a warm-heat types. Second, patient’s “yin yi” adjustment is disturbed or decreased which induced excessive “yang qi” in the body. We name this type of heat syndrome, “non-real heat.” In this situation, we need to use “cold” nature foods and medications to treat the patient. In “Cold syndromes,” patient may present cold hands and feet, pale face, often complaining cold, pale tongue with white coating, etc. The nature of “Cold syndromes” is either “cold agent” invasion or excessive “yin” with deficient “yang” in the body. In this situation, we need to use “warm” types of food and/ or medication for treatment.

The severity of a disease can be divided into “Exterior Syndrome” and Interior Syndrome.” Exterior syndrome is less severe and the sickness present at limbs, hair and skin or newly obtained sickness. Interior syndrome is more severe and the sickness is in the internal organs and the course of sickness is usually longer.

THE SPECIAL CHARACTERS OF CHINESE MEDICINE

The character direction of treatment of Chinese medicine aims on whole body treatment. Due to the idea of, “A small localized pathological change may affect the whole human body,” so Chinese medicine will make considerations of whole body adjustment for a localized sickness. As a result, the treatment which cures the common cold may lead to cure the disease of over-acidity of the stomach, a bonus effect.

Regarding treatment of the disease, Western medicine examines the patient, running tests on patient to obtain a diagnosis and then the illness is treated according to the diagnostic disease name. The treatment of the same disease name will be the same or alike.

But the Chinese medicine is different. Patient is treated according to their physical nature, disease syndromes and physiological response and emphasize on individual differences. Chinese medicine emphasizes even more on the relationship between mental and physical of a patient on treatment of all diseases.

[HUANG DE NAE JING] indicated that over-happiness hurt heart, angry liver, deep thinking hurt spleen and sorrow hurt lung—these all mean the healthy mental states are very important.

Modern western medicine concentrate in materials and science, looking for causes of diseases from anatomical and analytical basis of human tissues and organs, thus neglects the close relationship between human bodies and mental states. Modern western medicine try to explore and find the secret of nature, the pathophysiological basis of diseases themselves and thus create or invent chemical products or drugs to cure diseases. Yet these products or drugs are not nature products, they are organic synthesized or extracted components of nature products. They are good medication for many diseases but almost all organic compounds or drugs produce side effects on most patients.

On the other hand, Chinese medicine is a nature medicine. It is thought that human bodies are just like a world, all physiological changes are regarded as nature phenomena. Treat every thing according to nature rules. That means do and follow the nature. Use all nature resources, protect the nature and try for natural healthy survival. So it is an ideal medicine.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHINESE AND WESTERN MEDICINE

Chinese medicine emphasizes the relationship between human body and soul, individual and whole organization, function and appearance and patient as a whole subject for treatment. Western medicine, on the other hand, concentrates on the pathological changes of organs and search for agents, bacteria, fungi or viruses responsible for it. So Chinese medicine treats “the patient” and Western medicine treats “the disease.”

PHARMACOLOGY OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

The pharmacological concepts of Chinese medicine are derived from smells, tastes, shapes and color of plants. Basically it is divided into five tastes, five colors, five smells and five “belongs.” They belong to five Zang-organs and Six Fu-organs and have up, down, floating and sinking four characteristics.

Sour taste: color GREEN, smell dry, belongs to WOOD, used by liver and gallbladder, have consolidation function. For example, excessive sweating, urinate or defecate often can be helped by acidic type of food. Acid or sourness hurt tendon, so do not take acidic or sour food when you have tendon sickness.

Sweet taste: Color YELLOW, smell aromatic, belongs to EARTH, absorbed by spleen and stomach, have tonic, relaxing, adjusting functions. A person feels tired when there is a deficiency of qi and blood. Sweetness can increase qi and blood. Sweet taste also can relax muscle tightness and neutralize toxicity. Usually, Chinese medicine uses licorice, big dates, and logan to treat deficiency of qi and blood. Overweight or obese persons should try to avoid it.

Bitter taste: Color RED, smell burnt, belongs to FIRE, absorbed by heart and small intestine, have de-heat, de-wetness and diuretic functions. Bitter food or medication can induce vomiting and excrete excessive fluid. Bitter taste hurts bone. Do not eat bitter food if patient has bone sickness.

Spicy taste: Color WHITE, smell fish-stench, belongs to GOLD, absorbed by lungs and large intestine. Spicy taste can help improve blood circulation. For example, ginger, pepper, and external spicy pain relieving patch all improve blood circulation and reduce pain. Spicy taste hurts qi. Over consumption of spicy food will induce deficiency of qi. Qi deficient patients with ashma should eat spicy food as little as possible.

Salty taste: Color BLACK, small rotten, belongs to WATER, is absorbed by kidneys, have softening and osmotic effect. Drink one cup of light salty water while fasting in the morning can clean “dirty” food left in the stomach. Salty taste hurt blood. Patient with blood sickness should not eat salty food.

Up: Uprise, fir example, excessive fire, cough, nausea, vomiting, headache, etc. Need to use “down” medication to treat.

Down: Downward. Examples are frequent urination, prolapse of the rectum, gastroptosis, bleeding from uterus, menorrhagia, etc. Need to use “up or rise” medication to treat.

Floating: From inside toward outside. For example, in the case of common cold, in order to avoid it from the surface to get into inside of the body, a raw ginger and white portion of green onion (they are “floating” in nature) are recommended for treatment.

Sinking: From outside toward inside. For example, excessive perspiration, need to use “sinking” medication such as oyster shell to treat.

In general, food or medication with “up or rise” nature usually has some character of “floating” nature. With rare exception, we should be able to differentiate between “up,” “down,” “floating,” and “sinking.” For example, flowers and leaves have “rise and floating” nature and fruits and seeds are in the category of “down and sinking” nature. Light stuff is “up and floating” and heavy stuff (metals) belongs to “down and sinking” nature.

The above pharmacological classification concepts of food and medication are results of accumulation of experiences of thousands of years from our ancestors. Though there were no modern laboratories or experiments in the ancient time, the fact is that they do cure diseases, therefore, the observation, experiences and logical pharmacological concepts of food and medication are invaluable assets of Chinese medicine.

HOW TO CORRECTLY USE THE CHINESE MEDICATION

Chinese medication normally is composed of several elements of components. And the amount of certain element of components will be increased or decreased depend up on individual patient’s syndromes and signs, pause characters and the color and coating of tongue and prescribed by a licensed O.M.D. Normally very rare individual medication (one component) is used to treat the disease. But if it is the case, stop the single medication whenever syndrome is relieved to avoid over medication. Over medication by one single component is well described in any Chinese Medication Dictionary.
